My artwork strives to examine social and cultural issues through the lens of someone who is both included and excluded. Cultural identity as a Chinese American woman and the global Chinese diaspora plays a large role in my sculptural works. I choose to use varied materials during my creative process, and I am always seeking new ways of artistic expression. I embrace diversity in my work and seek to bring a new perspective to viewers. Often I will try to layer cultural or social concepts that may be obvious to one viewer, but completely overlooked by another. In this way I hope to challenge and broaden one’s way of viewing the world.
Born and raised in San Jose, Jennifer uses her cultural background to inspire her sculptural works. She draws on her Chinese, Taiwanese and Peruvian roots and wide range of artistic skills to explore various ideas and mediums in her art. Jennifer Lay is based in San Jose, California.
